Original bug ID: 5559
Reporter: @alainfrisch
Status: resolved (set by @xavierleroy on 2012-03-27T08:45:57Z)
Resolution: suspended
Priority: normal
Severity: minor
Category: configure and build/install

Bug description

One could probably simplify building ocamlbuild itself if we switch to regular Makefiles. This would have the advantage of reducing maintenance costs. Also, currently "make world" on a fully built system takes some time, because ocamlbuild is somehow rebuilt anyway (or maybe it just checks if it is up-to-date?).

Maybe also consider building Camlp4 with Makefiles?

This is not a problem report per se, and I feel that using the bug tracker this way diminishes its efficiency, making it harder to spot the real problem reports.

Yes, there would be some benefits to build ocamlbuild with Makefiles only. In particular, ocamlbuild would no longer be part of the bootstrap, and this could simplify ocamlbuild itself, which, if I remember correctly, comes with a special "bootstrap" version that stays in the intersection of Unix and Win32.
