If anyone is curious, I figured out what the cause of the performance problem here was.  It seems like a problem with Togl.

I'm using lablgl and Togl, and was using the Togl.timer_func function as an animation timer.  This function registers a Tk timer with Timer.add, and then re-adds it every time it triggers (since Timer.add is a on-shot).  The problem is, this means the last timer never gets deleted, and it's still in Tk's timer table (and since the recursive add call is inside Togl, you can't get access to the Timer.t to call Timer.remove).  These old timers accumulate and slow down everything after a few runs.  I replaced the call to Togl.timer_func with this code and everything works fine now:

       add_timer ())

And then I call Timer.remove on !timer_t after mainLoop.  (Is there a cleaner way to do this without the two let recs?)  Not sure if we should consider this a bug in Togl.timer_func or not, but it certainly does hose multiple runs on the toplevel.  Another option, besides manually deleting each timer like above, would be to have a Timer.clear_all, but I couldn't figure out how to enumerate through the currently registered timers.
