No offence intended to the authors, but it has to be said that I thought it an entirely unsuitable introduction to the language. Take a look at the section on Input/Output channels for a good (ie. bad) example. It takes all the way through to the middle of chapter 3 before we get this section which actually tells you how to do something practical with the language. Then to find that the introduction to I/O channels is next to useless - I could find out the same stuff by reading the header file. At least there's a couple of rather artificial examples.
