The advantage is transitivity. 

We're all nerds, we can faff about with tarballs
and post to this list about installation and
compatibility issues .. and be happy :D

But many of us are writing software for a market
that are not programmers but we still desire to
distribute our code as Source.

[In my case my market is C/C++ hackers .. not sure
if you'd consider then 'programmers' or not :]
